Goliath beetles are some of the largest insects in the world, as larvae, some species can weigh close to what a golf ball weighs. They’re found in the forests of Central and West Africa, where they spend most of their time eating decaying wood and fruit, which actually helps keep the forest ecosystem healthy.
Their populations are declining, mostly because of habitat loss and because they’re often collected for the exotic pet and specimen trade. Since they take over a year to grow from larva to adult, their numbers don’t recover quickly once they drop.
A portion of every sale from this shirt goes toward insect conservation efforts, so it’s a small way to support beetles like this one and the habitats they live in.
